WELLAND – Not our night.
On Friday night under the lights at Youngs Sportsplex in Welland, the Lambton Women’s Soccer was overwhelmed by a consistent Niagara offense in a 3-0 loss to the Knights.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 0-1-1 on the year.
From the outset of the contest, the Knights were in control on offense. Playing against the wind in the first half, the Lions were pinned on their side of half for the bulk of the opening 45 minutes. Niagara managed to get one shot past Lambton keeper Maddy Sloan (Woodstock, Ont.) in the half, but the Lambton defense managed to weather the storm and escape the half down just one.
In the second half, the Lions were unable to muster up any offense despite now having the wind at their backs. The Knights continued their offensive pressure and added a pair of insurance goals midway through the second half to put the game out of reach.
The Lions managed just one shot on goal on the afternoon, compared to 16 for the Knights. Sloan made eight saves on the day while Emily Roy (Milton, Ont.) had the team’s lone shot on net.
Lambton’s depth was tested throughout the second half as injuries started to pile up. Abbey Connell (London, Ont.) and Alysia Knapp (Strathroy, Ont.) both left the field in the second half with injuries.
Following the loss, the Lions don’t have much time to regroup before they are back on the field on Sunday afternoon. The Lions return home to take on the visiting Humber Hawks on Sunday at the Lambton College Soccer Field.
Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
