SARNIA – Riding a wave of momentum, the Lambton Lions Women’s Soccer program will be looking to make it two wins in a row on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lions play host to the St. Clair Saints on Tuesday for a mid-week showdown at the Lambton College Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m., weather permitting. Bring an umbrella with you, just in case.
In their season opener on Saturday against the visiting Conestoga Condors, the Lions used a four-goal second half to come away with a 4-2 victory. After falling behind 1-0 in the opening half, Lambton got a pair of goals from both Erin Murray (Bright’s Grove, Ont.) and Shawna Oag (London, Ont.) in the second half to ignite the offense and push the Lions to the win.
Keeper Toria McRae (Sarnia, Ont.) made 18 saves in net, 14 of which came in the first half as the Condors used a favourable wind direction to send everything at the net.
The contingent of midfielders for the Lions kept the team rolling against the Condors. The attacking midfielders found their rhythm as the game moved along and played a key role in Lambton’s offensive outburst in the second half. Across the board, the Lions found their footing, and confidence, and it showed as their play strengthened as the minutes ticked away.
With the first win under their belts, the Lions have their sights set on a second straight win to open the season. Lambton will be in tough, as St. Clair has had Lambton’s number in the past, but there’s a buzz within this year’s Lambton team that hasn’t been around in some time.
In their season opener, the Saints recorded a 1-1 tie against the Fanshawe Falcons. Jaclyn French (Windsor, Ont.) scored the Saints lone goal in the second half on a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Keeper Athena Dimario (Windsor, Ont.) made 11 saves in the win.
