The 2016-17 athletics year at Lambton College wrapped up on Monday evening with the annual Student Appreciation Night which saw a number of awards presented to student-athletes.
The event was headlined with the presentation of Athlete of the Year and Alumni Association Excellence Award hardware being handed out.
Madisyn Campbell (Sarnia, ON) was named Female Varsity Athlete of the Year for her success on the basketball court this season. Campbell averaged 19.1 points per game which was good enough for fifth in the OCAA. She was also named an OCAA Player of the Week in the fall semester. Women's coach Dave Elsley commented that "Madisyn is an extremely hard worker who is willing to put in lots of time and effort to get better. She constantly improved throughout the season."
The recipient of the Male Varsity Athlete of the Year was Branden Padgett (Detroit, MI). Branden was named to his third straight OCAA men's basketball all-star team, finishing fifth in provincial scoring at 20.2 points per game. Padgett was also named an OCAA player of the week this season. "Branden has been an anchor for the men's basketball team for the past three seasons," says coach James Grant. "He is an extremely dedicated player who's work ethic is above and beyond what's required. He continues to be one of the premier players in the OCAA."
The Lambton College Alumni Association awarded this year's Excellence Award to Chelsea Wagner (Sarnia, ON) and Zach Moniz (St. Thomas, ON).
Chelsea Wagner was a five-year soccer player for the Lions and was named an OCAA All-Star in three of those seasons. She was also named the All-Academic Team twice. "Chelsea leads by example," says her coach Kevin Simmons. "Her skill combined with her speed of play makes her a team leader. She is a fierce competitor and plays the game with maturity and enthusiasm. Chelsea makes her team and teammates better because of her hard work and her ability to bring other players into the game."
Men's soccer player Zach Moniz was named to the OCAA All-Star team, while also grabbing OCAA & CCAA All-Academic honours. He also was part of the Fire Combat Team for the past two years. "Zach had a tremendous college career," says coach Shane Bettridge. "Zach had a year that will go down in the history books. Everything we asked of him he did and as a strong individual he was a perfect leader for our team." Moniz finished the season with three shutouts and 4th in save percentage.
